Posted by: taw7971 on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 12:40 PM
AnnouncementsIf you need extra time with your websites, Charlie and I will give you until noon Saturday. (That's noon tomorrow.)

This only applies to the two online sections; not Charlie's face to face section.

Thanks so much for all your hard work. Charlie and I are really proud of all that you guys have accomplished this semester.

Note: Actually, it was announced in class today that the f2f section could have until noon tomorow, too -- Charlie

Wanna Share Your Website With Everyone?

Posted by: cel4145 on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 09:38 PM
HypertextSince I shared my new website with everyone, it got me thinking you might like to do the same as well. Anyone who wants, post a link to your website below. Might be good to include a sentence or two describing it. You could also throw out any last minute request for suggestions.

Where to Begin Writing Hypertext?

Posted by: cel4145 on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 - 01:42 AM
HypertextWhere to begin writing hypertext? Well, it's on my new blog site.

Anyway, the post is here. I was hoping that some/all of you would be wiling to post to the comment board with my blog post there instead. It's new software that I've just started using (notes on why). If we break it, we'll just move the conversation back here :)

One thing. You can only post anonymously, so I'd like you to include your username from here.

Thanks!

So Long Stanley...

AnnouncementsGrowing up and still living twenty minutes outside of Detroit, Michigan--I've been a Red Wings fan almost all my life--and I haven't experienced anything this disappointing in a while. They got swept (4-0) in the series against the Mighty Ducks. Disney made a movie about them for crying out loud! I'm just sorry to say that I can no longer have the opportunity to watch my favorite team play their way to the cup, because they have been eliminated from the playoffs. A total shocker if you ask any hockey fan.

Oops forgot about Tuesday's homework

Posted by: mcc02s on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 - 09:25 PM
HypertextAlright I've seen some bland pages before, but this one take the cake, ice cream, and all of the candy. FSU dorm life 101: chapters 1 - 4 was just bad beyond belief. I went to this page and there is was 4 links and after the 4 links just text and nothing else. Yeah they had a couple of pictures of the hall and stuff like that but nothing really to sell if for good or for bad. I mean when you put up a page there should be a couple of things: pictues, links, good text, and a good reason to put up a page like that in the first place. This lacked most of the above and left me with one of those hollow, empty any and unsatified feeling.

The next page I went to was Nole News . This is another page I really didn't care for either but you elarn from what you don't like if you are smart. This page is bland as well there really isn't too much to it and quite frankly it's hard to read sometime. The blackround is very important to a page for reading and the builder of this page didn't reall preview it enought or just has bad eyes.

HypertextI found the website FSU dormlife 101 on the writing.fsu site and liked the homepage. That is about all I liked. It had four pictures of four select dorms at FSU with links to a write up on each dorm.

Whats more important with a web page? "Visual" or "content?"

Posted by: o_really_o on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 - 12:10 PM
HypertextWhats more important in a hypertext? Visual or content?

After reading Jean Mason's Hyperwriting a new process model it made me think about the topic of whats more important the "look" of a webpage or the "content." I think in order to produce a good website the two must work hand and hand.

First impressions is what makes or breaks a website. If the artist has a good impression then he or she is more likely to stick around and navigate, and read the content. But if the site is poorly laid out, or just tooo much text on a plain background, then the person is more likely to leave the site before reading a word.

In the article it said that text should only take up to max of 1/3 of the viewing window of the site. I think that statement is true because users are scared away by too much text. People dont want to be at a site and scroll down for what seems infinitely. I know thats one thing i hate about some websites, is that it seems like you scroll down forever. Break the text up and fit so its in the "viewing window" of the screen, meaning that you dont have to scroll down much to read the content. It would be better to throw in a couple pictures and graphics that correllate with the content to help the reader flow through the site.

So what do you guys think is more important when it comes to hypertext?

Webzines

AssignmentsAfter surfing through the sites of other students just like me, it gave me a better picture of what my site should look like when it is done. I found this directory to be very interesting to see what other kids were writing about. I came along one site SPORTS ENGLISH 1145 CLASS WEBSITE that I really liked.

ARRG! My retinas are burning!!!!

Posted by: Rabbite on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 - 11:23 PM
HypertextPeople, please, for the sake of your fellow websufers, quit with the bright colors! There is one thing that will make me hit the back button faster than Oprah on a baked ham, and that is my eyes burning. There is absolutely no need for a bright red background and hot pink text. This is not Seizure Bots after all. The main purpose of your hypertext is the writing right? If you go overboard with the awful colors then nobody is going to stick around to read it! That is all....

What are Webzines about?

Posted by: cpq02 on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 - 09:21 PM
HypertextLooking through the other Web zines of other students was very helpful to me. It let me get a better idea of what my final website will be like. It is true you learn from other's mistakes. Some of the sites included hypertext and some hyperfiction. Hyperfiction takes a lot of creativity. I would think you would have to have an imagination to take something and make up a story. I read Mardi Gras Mayham which was a hyperfiction. I thought it was very interesting. The stories were good and all linked to each other. As you read one story about a person you would learn more about another person through that story. I liked the personal information on the characters too. The only thing I would add would be pictures of what the characters look like.

What Works?

Posted by: MahiMahi on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 - 09:21 PM
AssignmentsUpon going to the webzines list I found several webzines from previous ENC1101 and 1102 classes. Some were done well, others I thought not so well. In my mind the factor that can make or break a website is it's organization.

Four Girls, a Guy and a Computer was a website that I don't think was organized to well. The first page doesn't have any type of introduction to what the site is. Then there are 16 hyperlinks to various essays. I think the essay should have been less linear, and instead of listing each individual paper for each person - list the people which would hyperlink to their work.

Love, Music and Beer, however, I believe is very well organized. The site lists the titles essays, and then lists the author below. This would help a person looking to read something else by the same writer. Also, the site is very appealing to the eyes and looks extremely professional. This site also uses many pictures to help break up the text. Hypertext is used very efficiently using the sidebar.

Other things I saw that helped organization was having a "HOME" hypertext to get back to the begining of the text on everypage. This makes surfing much easier.

Webzines

Posted by: Tabily on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 - 09:20 PM
HypertextThe first webzine I visited was Spider-man. I love Spider-man, so I was really interested in what his webzine might look like. But alas, all it had was an extremely blinding background and some spelling errors. I was kind of disappointed.
