This semester has been a pretty interesting semester as far as writing goes. The narrative was a lot of fun to write and pretty cool to work though. I blogged a lot more the second half of the semester, whether it be adding extra journal entries or just comment on my classmates work. I understood and retained many different methods of evaluating and revising different kinds of drafts.
As a blogger this latter half of the semester I feel I did a fairly good job. I responded more to my classmates drafts then I did last semester. I also took advantage of blocking to improve my writing by experience. Because I wrote so much throughout the semester my writing skills have improved drastically. The ability to communicate with people through writing instantly is a great tool in learning how to write for a variety of people.
My peer responses on drafts may not have been that far up to par. I’m a really timid person and it is not usually in my nature criticize someone else’s work. I also feel that I am not qualified to criticize someone’s work because I don’t know that much about writing. Why should I give someone advice on writing when I can’t even write very well myself.
In class I felt that I did as best I can to contribute to conversation. Sometimes I don’t really understand the readings that well, and I’m afraid that I might look like an idiot if I participate in conversation. When I see a point that I think I could make well then there is no holding me back from making it, it’s just sometimes hard for me to come up with one.
Responding to group members was a very beneficial practice. When I wrote a paper I basically was writing it for my peers. They were my primary audience. Any good writer knows that you always have to write for your audience. Responding with my peers in my group helped me to see what they were looking for in a good piece of writing. Seeing as how they were my main audience heeding their advice made writing a whole lot easier.
My biggest strength I’ve gotten from this class is learning how to write for an audience. I’ve learned how to write to entertain the people that I’m writing it for. A lot of this was taught by the group discussions, and the blogging. I’ve learned that Sometimes you may have to give creativity of originality a back seat in order to write a good paper. It is not up to you to determine whether or not something that You’ve wrote is a good piece of writing. It’s up to the people reading it.
One way that I could still improve in is grammar. I have the most awful grammar.Grammar rules are numerous and agitating. I can never remember when not use a comma or the right “there” to use. It drives me crazy. Another area I could probably improve in is the flow of my writing. I find my sentences a little jumpy and kind of hard to follow. Ohh well I’m only a freshmen still plenty of time to learn.
