A baby’s birthday doesn’t begin until it is born......
On January 22, 1973, an unmarried woman by the name of Jane Roe filed a case to the Supreme Court asking to safely and legally terminate her pregnancy. From there the Court legalized abortions stating that a woman’s right to decide whether to become a parent or not deserves Constitutional protection. It is said that because of this woman, abortion is now legalized in most states.
Millions of individuals who are “pro-choice” are against federal funding for woman who can not afford an abortion. But what about the rich? The wealthy have the opportunity to travel where they need to go in order to receive a safe abortion. But, what transpires for those women who do not have the funding themselves to obtain a safe abortion? Sadly, the answer for some is seeking out illegal abortions.
In a recent magazine article called “Abortion and Woman’s Health” by Rebecca Benson, it was documented that abortion is eleven times safer than childbirth. I believe that the legalization of abortions will bring about a decrease in infant and maternal mortality. If our society seeks to outlaw abortions, I feel it will only encourage women to discontinue their pregnancies by means which are dangerous and many times illegal. Before abortion became legal, it was estimated that a million women in the United States alone sought out illegal abortions. As a consequence, thousands were killed in the process. Thus, proving my hypothesis.
In 1991, it was reported the worldwide there were hundreds of thousands of fetus’ being killed by means of illegal abortions. A rise in women going to jail because of these incidents also occurred. This is just a small reason why abortions should remain legalized.
In China, abortion is not only common but encouraged. What would happen to their population if woman were not allowed to abort an unwanted pregnancy? The answer I think would be a higher risk of illegal fetal mutilation. I believe this would happen because woman are not allowed to give birth to more than one female.
Unfortunately, millions of women across the globe are affected with heart disease, kidney disease, sickle cell anemia, HIV, and other illnesses that can be life threatening. The availability of abortion has helped medical complications that could have resulted from childbirth. If a woman knew that her child would be born with the HIV virus and would have to suffer through his/her short lived life, why couldn’t she have the opportunity to discontinue the pregnancy? Because the government says tough shit? No!
Others worry that after an abortion, a woman can no longer conceive. This is a fallacy. Not only is it possible to get pregnant after undergoing an abortion, but one can even get pregnant a few weeks after an abortion. Another false belief is the one that breast cancer is linked to abortions. But, according to the National Cancer Institute,"overall, current scientific evidence does not support a relationship between induced abortion and breast cancer."
Let’s say that you are a mother of a beautiful, young daughter who unfortunately got raped. Would you look at this child and tell her that she must now carry this child around in her body until birth? Would she now be forced to feel the disgust and anger for an entire pregnancy? I perceive that if any woman; young or old, were to get raped and was told that she would have to bear this child, would eventually become depressed, disgusted, or even worse....think about suicide. I truly believe that if this incident happened to a family member of someone whom is “pro-choice”, would rethink saying no to abortions. The government should not be allowed to force a defenseless child to go through the torture of such a catastrophe.
And what would happen if a young child who did a foolish act became pregnant and was forced to have a baby? Children, some even as young as 14, have been able to conceive. If a child who has not yet fully developed were to go through a pregnancy, would deliver stress to their body and could cause life long damage to their bodies. Children that young are not equipped for such a process; the process of having and delivering a baby. Some may argue on this subject that the child was old enough to engage in sexual activities, so she must now bear the consequences of her actions. Everyone makes mistakes, but forcing a child to have a child is a mistake in itself.
The overall question about abortion, is whether or not a woman should make her own decisions about family, or should the government do it for her? There are concerns that the government is becoming too powerful and will stop at nothing to gain control. If the government can start telling women when to have a child and when not to, then what else would they have control over in the future?
The Supreme Courts latest decision Stenberg v. Carhart , had a five to four margin. If just one of the five Justices in the majority should have stepped down, than a woman’s right to abortion could have been in great danger. Just think. If women were forced to carry out unwanted pregnancies, the result could be thousands of unwanted children. This could even lead to millions of children being unloved or even abandoned.
A baby doesn’t get to choose his/her family, they are born into it without any say in the matter. What happens if a baby is born into a family where their world is revolved around drugs or alcohol? This baby would have to suffer because the government would not allow this woman to end her pregnancy. Some people argue that the women who undergo abortions are going against what the bible says of “thou shall not kill.” Buts what’s worse? Killing a fetus that has not yet taken a breath of air? Or having a baby and not fulfilling the responsibilities of a mother?
There are individuals who believe that abortion kills a baby. But in all actuality, abortion is the discontinuation of a fertilized egg. Anti-abortion groups believe that life begins at conception, but for many it ends at birth.
Almost finished draft!
