Revision Assignment for Exploratory D draft 2
Written by cel4145 on November 13, 2003 - 19:46

Your revision assignment for Exploratory D draft 2 is a little different than what you've done before because it asks you to change the style of what you have written. With this in mind, when revising your story, you are to do at minimum the following five things:

  • You wrote your 1st draft in 3rd person with an omniscient narrator. Now rewrite your draft as a 1st person narrative for the 2nd draft.
  • Make sure you are using dialogue. Stories where characters interact generally include dialogue since it gives the story more immediacy and is a way to develop characters, to reveal things to the read through showing. If you've already written much dialogue, then begin revising it to reveal even more about the characters.
  • Do not "tell" the reader what the narrator thinks. Use interior monologue. In other words, render the thoughts of the narrator at that time. Let the reader hear the voice of the narrator's thinking. For an example, consider this text by Dorothy Parker
  • Write the story in present tense, not past.
  • And finally, show, don't tell.
  • You are of course welcome to revise your story in other ways as well. When writing your process memo for the 2nd draft, be sure to discuss your work with some of the items mentioned above. If you have any questions about these parameters, post a well-detailed explanation of your concerns to the comment board with this post. We can/should all jump in then to offer our suggestions and help.

your revision doesn't say anything about word count. is it supposed to be 600 words again, or 800, like the usual second drafts? thanks

If you look on the calendar, it shows how long the revision must be.

Mke's right. This is merely the revision assignment. The minimum word count is, and has always been, specified within the course calendar.
