The past century’s concept of “literacy” believed in textbooks and typewriters. They didn’t depend on computers and the Internet for everyday uses. Now, because of the great advances in technology, our generation is learning differently and by different means than ever before.
It was said that electricity became a transformative medium for social practices. It changed everything from homes to workplaces, and transportation and entertainment. Just like electricity, the World Wide Web is becoming the new medium for learning.
Our generation now have the availability of the Internet, with instant messaging and email readily available for fast connection. In todays world it is now possible to look up almost anything and retrieve information on whatever one desires. An endless amount of information is posted on the Web.
Today’s youth is growing up in a digital world. The “new literacy” beyond text and image is one of information navigation. Our generation navigates through confusing complex situations. This is evident to me because my grandparents are computer literate and have no regard to learn about computers. All they know is that they never had to use them, and they still don’t need them.
