Grammar and its new form....

Wertheimer in his statement on grammar takes the position that He believes that if the grammar on the internet continues the way it is headed our language continue to deteriorate. Internet users are becoming accustomed to the shorthand and timely use of grammar in the internet.

“The cure to this disease may be found in a core set of commonly supported abbreviations collectively referred to as IM-speak. By learning to communicate in the same way, we can guarantee the forward compatibility of discussions between young Web-savvy kids and geriatric surfers alike.” That statement found in his work means that he believes there is still time to help correct and fix the way users word their life.

Wertheimer also states “The damage is irreparable.” So that kind of contradicts what the above statement meant to me. Throughout the paper he kind of back and forth between believes that it can’t be fixed and it can’t. I could go through and find things that could support both views and the way that he feels on both sides. “Factor in the increasingly widespread use of non-traditional Internet devices, and the notion of typing to the standards of tight-fisted grammarians at the expense of busy contacts and one’s own free time starts looking like the brain dead decision it is.”

He is trying to make the fact that time is precious these days and people don’t have the time to make the long sentences and lengthy writing fast. When is taking his position I am not sure at what side he is trying to take but I do think that he supports what he is trying to say. The work has a lot of information and important thoughts because it is becoming so natural for the shorthand and IM-speak to be used.

In closing, “You can turn a long thought into an abbreviation, but you can’t convert a slow comment into a high speed web statement.” That will tell you right there what position that he takes in the paper.

i agree with david wertheimer that if the grammar on the internet continues or language is going to go to the craper. I also think its great that he wants to com up with some kind of undiversal internet language. I think it would almost inpossible to set up someknid internet language. I who's going to make it up, who's going to take time to learn it, and finaly whos is going to inforce it. Its a great idea but it will never happen.
