ENC 1101-B3 & B4: Writing for Discovery

Thanksgiving break was great, but it really messed with my head. I was totally happy here at FSU, I had settled in to a great routine and was just cruising along. I probably could have stayed here for another year straight living that way.

Last night, I watched the trailer for the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for about the 20th time. I don't think that it's possible for anyone to understand just how excited I am about this movie.

This Wednesday I had my final PT test of the semester for ROTC. We are tested on three things, 2 minutes of push-ups, 2 minutes of sit-ups, and a 2 mile run. I was really worried about it because i had been working out like crazy to get ready for it, then I went home for break and did not do 1 push up or sit up the whole week, and only ran one time. I returned to school figuring that I had set myself up for disaster.

This week has been really busy for me. I didn't think that i would have this much stuff to do, but it seems like I have not had one free minute. Today I am skipping math to wrap up my English stuff for the semester.

He had just had a miserable time at the homecoming dance, and after dropping his whiny date off at her house, he just didn’t feel like going home and calling it a night. When I got back to school after Thanksgiving break, I was really in the Christmas mood. Looking around my room for the first time in a week, I realized that my room was totally devoid of any holiday spirit.

Last week I went home for the first time in 7 weeks. It was so great to see my family again, and my girlfriend was back from Texas too. It was so nice sleeping in my own bed again, and driving on the same old roads I've driven a million times before, and listening to my little brothers fighting at the dinner table.

This first Portfolio was a very even combination of the other two drafts of this story. I liked how it sounded a lot better in the 3rd person, so I wanted to stick with that. But at the same time, I found that all of the dialogue I had created for my 1st person draft would turn out to be very useful in this next one. I already liked the plot of my story, so I have to admit that most of the changes were only cosmetic, with the addition of more dialogue. I think that this story does an excellent job of showing more than telling, which is a problem that I have dealt with in the past. I especially like the image that I painted of Pauls truck, and the other little details I added, like suddenly seeing the horrible faces of the aliens in the gleam of the headlights. The only thing that really made it hard to write was the fact that now I am at home so I could only write for like 2 minutes at a time without getting interrupted. I also ended up switching around the order of a few sentences to help make the story easier to understand.

After making a 78 on my Precalc test today, and failing to raise my average to a C going into the final, my life has taken a sudden shift in direction. I am going to drop out of school and become a bounty hunter, in search of either Osama bin Laden or Saddam Hussein.

I don't like this revision as much as I liked the first draft. I feel that somehow, having to use the dialogue in a first person instead of third person perspective. It just didn't sound as effective. I have always struggled with dialogue in the past.

Last night I did the most shit brained thing I've done all semester, even more stupid than losing my wallet. I accidently erased my Morrowind save file that I had been playing since the beginning of september.

Tomorrow my brother Matt is coming to visit me and see the North Carolina State game. I haven't seen him in a while and he is a really cool brother, so it will be great to have him come here so I can show him around a little.
